School Committee Meeting - Tuesday, March 20, 2007

The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 7:30 pm. Mr. Young, Ms. Allen, Mr. Guiffre, Ms. Littlefield, and Ms. Newman were present. Also present was Ms. Wong. Dr. King was absent.

ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. Young read aloud an announcement prepared by Rena Mirkin regarding the death this morning of a Wellesley High School student, Class of 2007. Out of consideration for the day’s events and in acknowledgment that two members of the committee are well acquainted with the family of the deceased, Mr. Young announced that the school committee would abbreviate its agenda for this meeting .

There were no citizens present who wished to speak.

ACTION ITEM
Superintendent Contract
Mr. Young reported that the committee has developed a contract with the help of a human resources consultant. The proposed compensation includes a salary of $167,000, an annuity in the amount of $2,000, and a car allowance of $3,600. The contract has been reviewed by town counsel.

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED: To offer a contract to Bella T. Wong as superintendent of schools effective July 1, 2007, as presented.

The motion CARRIED (5-0)

Ms. Wong expressed enthusiasm about her new responsibilities. In looking forward to her work with the committee and in the community she further acknowledged the difficult events earlier in the day and commended the community for the way it has responded in reflection of the core values.

The committee concurred with Mr. Young’s suggestion to table consideration of the evaluation instrument for superintendent until a subsequent meeting.
