School Committee Meeting - Tuesday, July 13, 2006
Warren Conference Center, Ashland

The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 12:35 pm. Ms. Jablonski, Ms. Allen, Ms. Littlefield, Ms. Newman, and Mr. Young were present. Also present were Dr. King and Ms.Wong.

ACTION ITEMS
School Committee Reorganization
Dr. King called for nominations for a reorganized committee.

Chairman
Ms. Littlefield nominated Ms. Newman to become chairman. The motion was seconded by Ms. Allen.
Ms. Jablonski nominated Mr. Young to become chairman. The motion was seconded by Mr. Young.

Ms. Newman, followed by Mr. Young, addressed the committee and subsequently responded to questions from members regarding major issues facing the school committee in the upcoming year, their individual expectations and willingness to lead, and the experience and skills they believe they could bring to the role of committee chairman.

Dr. King called for a vote. The tally was Ms. Newman - 2 votes; Mr. Young - 3 votes.

Mr. Young was declared the new chairman for 2006-07.

Vice Chairman
Mr. Young nominated Ms. Newman as vice chairman. The nomination was supported by unanimous vote.

Secretary
Mr. Young nominated Ms. Allen as secretary. The nomination was supported by unanimous vote.

Statements of Interest - High School and Middle School
Ms. Wong circulated statements of interest addressed to the Massachusetts School Building Authority regarding the middle school and high school projects. These statements advocate for reimbursement from the state to the town for a percentage of building project expenses. After approval by school committee, each statement must be presented to and accepted by the board of selectmen.

Upon motion made by Mr. Young, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED: To approve statements of interest regarding building projects at Wellesley Middle School and Wellesley High School as presented and to recommend presentation of same to the board of selectmen.

High School Project - Program Advisory Committee
Mr. Young reported that Ms. Sawitsky asked the School Committee to revisit its vote on June 20 authorizing the town moderator to appoint a high school program advisory committee.

Upon motion made by Ms. Jablonski, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED: To request the Town Moderator to appoint a committee to review and participate in the high school program visioning process associated with the proposed high school building project, in preparation for the anticipated presentation to Annual Town Meeting.

Superintendent Search
The committee acknowledged its role in leading the search for a new superintendent for the 2007-2008 school year and by consensus agreed upon new chairman Michael Young and immediate past chairman Susan Jablonski to serve as the sub committee that will work with school administrators to develop an RFP and launch the search process.
