School Committee Meeting – Monday, January 7, 2008

The meeting was called to order by the Chairman at 7:30 pm.  Mr. Young, Ms. Allen, Mr. Guiffre, Ms. Littlefield, and Ms. Newman were present.  Also present were Ms. Wong and Ms. Gregory. Representing the Student Congress was Kelsey Woerner.

ACTION ITEMS
FY09 Budget

In a poll of the committee for preliminary comments on the proposed budget the members expressed unanimous support for the sustaining level and their individual thoughts regarding virtual high school, advanced orchestra, new position in high school guidance, fees, athletic program, class size issues, contingency staffing, academic labs, new central office and high school administrative positions, and proposed accelerated implementation of the elementary mathematics curriculum.  With added comments from the student congress representative and high school principal, the committee discussed the academic labs, guidance, and high school administration. The chairman called for motions after tallying a consensus of support from the committee regarding

  • Elementary unassigned position
  • Assistant principal/secretary positions at high school
  • Athletic opportunity expansion
  • Increase in parking fee
  • Guidance counselor position
  • Academic labs for mathematics
  • Advanced orchestra
  • Virtual high school

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Ms. Newman, it was unanimously

VOTED:     To amend the base budget to provide for an unassigned teaching position and $5,000 classroom materials.

 (5 – 0)

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED:     To amend the base budget to provide for a new high school guidance counselor position

(5 – 0)

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Mr. Guiffre, it was

VOTED:     To reaffirm within the sustaining budget provision for a new high school assistant principal position and secretary

(4 – 1; Ms. Allen voted No)

 

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Mr. Guiffre, it was unanimously

VOTED:     To amend the base budget to provide for unassigned increase of $5,000 in the athletic budget

(5 – 0)

Upon motion made by Mr. Guiffre, seconded by Ms. Littlefield

VOTED:     To reaffirm within the sustaining budget provision for 0.8FTE staffing for high school mathematics academic labs

(4 – 1; Ms. Allen voted No)

 

 

Upon motion made by Mr. Guiffre, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED:       To index the high school parking fee to the bus fee

(5 – 0)

 

Upon motion made by Mr. Guiffre, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED:       To adopt the entire sustaining budget for FY09 except as adjusted in prior votes as cited above.

(5 – 0)

 

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Ms. Allen, it was unanimously

VOTED:       To amend the advance budget for FY09 to make provision for the addition of 0.2FTE staffing for virtual high school and 0.2FTE staffing for advanced orchestra.

(5 – 0)

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Mr. Guiffre, it was

VOTED:       To approve a total budget for FY09 in the amount of $55,042,308, a 10.93% increase over FY08.

(4 – 1; Ms. Allen voted No)

 

Wellesley High School -- 1600 Enrollment

The committee reviewed the projected impact of an enrollment peak of 1600 students at the high school specifically regarding the capacity of the auditorium, lockers, and classrooms.

Upon motion made by Ms. Littlefield, seconded by Mr. Guiffre, it was unanimously

VOTED:       To amend the architectural educational program for Wellesley High School to accommodate 1600 students through the following changes:

                   • 4 additional regular classrooms and 1 flex classroom

                  • 50 additional seats in the auditorium

                   • 1 additional learning center

                   • incremental increases in cafeteria and locker rooms

(5 – 0)
