Wellness Policy

May, 2006

The Wellesley Public Schools is committed to providing a school environment that enhances learning and development of lifelong wellness practices for healthy eating and physical activity.

To realize this commitment, the following goals are established:

  1. Student nutrition and school lunch services including snack bars/a la carte foods and vending machines comply with federal, state, and the local guidelines.
  2. Nutrition education is provided and promoted in Fitness and Health classes and in the nurses’ offices so that students learn the skills and knowledge to make healthy food choices.
  3. Fitness and health education and opportunities for physical activity are essential elements of each school’s instructional program.  The program shall provide the opportunity for all students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to participate in a lifetime of healthy physical activity.
  4. All school-based activities that are designed to promote student wellness are consistent with local wellness policy goals.

Being mindful of the adverse effects of excess consumption of calories, added sugar and unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats), good judgment, moderation, and choice will be encouraged in the selection of foods for school parties, activities and fundraisers.  Foods served at school parties and other activities should provide healthy choice selections.

Health Council
The Health Council will be convened by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and composed of a principal, the Directors of Fitness and Health and Food Services, the Department Head of Nurses, and one parent.  The Health Council will be established to monitor the progress of the implementation of the above policy.  The Council will be responsible for updating the WPS Nutrition Guidelines as necessary.

A series of implementation steps will be taken for each of the above goals.
